I didn’t even go to University, yet you’re reading this article. What does that tell you? Well, it should tell you that you don’t need a degree to get your foot in the door. Even though that might sound like a pipe dream, we’ve made it easy for you to become a Software Developer; even if you have zero experience whatsoever.
It’s called the Scion Coalition Scheme [SCS] and it’s been running for the best part of a year now. We’ve had candidates come on-board who want to become developers from many different backgrounds. Some were fresh out of college looking for an opportunity, others have transferred from university after realising they took the wrong course and some wanted a complete career change.
"The thing that made this course different from other educational providers I've experienced is the ability to work alongside real practitioners. I have not only learnt to code but also how to work as part of a technical team within a company environment. This has given me a true insight into the life of a developer."
- Michael Grimshaw, Graduate Developer.
The SCS was introduced because as a business we were struggling to find development resource in Norfolk and the surrounding areas. There weren’t many development opportunities for people to sink their teeth into and grow their skills. Businesses either wanted years of experience or didn’t have the resource internally to take on and help educate those willing to learn.
Once we had figured out that the best solution was to grow our own resource, instead of panning for gold in what appeared to be an empty river, we got together and fleshed out the idea. We started off small, hiring only three candidates who were exposed to commercial environments; working 40 hours a week. Their days consisted of a mixture of in-house learning and tutorials coupled with real life entry level development tasks for clients, with the assistance of our senior developers. Within six months all three candidates had picked up the necessary skills to be promoted as a junior developer, skills which you can’t even acquire in a four year course at university!
Come the New Year we had realised two things:
- We had a sustainable teaching platform, which worked.
- We could outsource this model to help other technology firms plug their resource gap too.
Now we have even more graduates working as full time Junior Developers and a further 10 candidate’s currently in training. Our plan is to keep hiring more enthusiastic individuals who are keen to learn software development, irrespective of their background or their experience.
The course is fully funded, you will be working alongside other candidates on group projects and surrounded by a team of highly skilled senior developers to bounce ideas off and receive feedback. It could be the career opportunity you’ve been waiting for. So if you don’t fancy the thousands of pounds worth of debt accrued by going to University, or maybe want a complete career change then Get In Touch using the form below or ring us on 01603 515007, and tell us why you would like to become a developer.
